There go the gun click

Nina Gordon has a brief cover of NWA's Straight out of Compton which should entertain. Not as good as her Veruca Salt era cover of the Sex Pistol's "Bodies," but what are you going to do? Guess you'll have to buy that one.

Ah, but how does it compare the Dynamite Hack cover of Boyz in the Hood? (How do you spell that?)

That's a cover? Who did originally?

I've heard it was Ice Cube and I have heard it was NWA. Not being an adolescent, middle class, white boy, I really am the wrong person to ask. For all I know Ice Cube was NWA. If they didn't wear too much black and sing depressing lyrics to a poppy dance tune, I really don't that much about them.

The original was a track by Easy E, another member of NWA (w/ Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and MC Ren). Since E died (of AIDS I think) in the late 80s/early 90s, apparently Dre had to sign off on the cover. I read somewhere that he insisted the word "niggas" be edited, so that the Weezer wannabes that comprise Dynamite Hack would not find caps in their respective asses. The DH cover, I might add, is in heavy rotation on my iPod.

I read on the Web that the origonal version that played on local Austin radio had the "N" word. I think you can still download that version.
